Attractions:

There are several marae on Mitiaro- ancient stone foundations used to mark out religious meeting places. You can also visit the caves, cemetery and the fortress at Te Pare, where the original inhabitants would take refuge from invading Atiuan warriors.
  • Caves
There are some great swimming holes inside the limestone caves of the makatea. Good options include Vai Naure, a brilliantly clear freshwater pool with a large fern grotto, and Vai Tamaroa, an open pool surrounded by 10m high cliffs.
