There are many caves to explore on Mitiaro, some of which have delightful freshwater swimming holes. Motorbikes can be hired on the island, offering an ideal way to explore. The people of the island of Mitiaro are renowned for producing crafts, especially pandanus mats, handbags, purses and hats. Agricultural products are the main items exported.

  • Historic Sites
    There are several marae on Mitiaro- ancient stone foundations used to mark out religious meeting places. You can also visit the caves, cemetery and the fortress at Te Pare, where the original inhabitants would take refuge from invading Atiuan warriors.
  • Caves
    There are some great swimming holes inside the limestone caves of the makatea. Good options include Vai Naure, a brilliantly clear freshwater pool with a large fern grotto, and Vai Tamaroa, an open pool surrounded by 10m high cliffs.
