It’s easy to pass the time on beautiful Ovalau Island, with its rugged volcanic peaks, lush rainforest and gentle pace of life. Ovalau is part of the group of islands east of Viti Levu, known as Lomaiviti. The heart of Ovalau is the charming township of Levuka, Fiji’s former capital. Located on Ovalau’s eastern coast, it was once a lawless centre for sailors, traders and whalers, but these days the picturesque downtown and its historic shopfronts offer a friendly port of call for visitors. Ovalau has a post office, travel centre, hospital, banks and a Tourist Information Centre, located at the Levuka Community Centre on Beach Street.
Things to do on Ovalau include swimming, snorkelling, diving, surfing, cycling and hiking. Ovalau has many scenic walks, including a 5-hour trail to Lovoni village at the centre of Ovalau’s volcanic crater, or visit one of the tradtional villages for an authentic taste of Fijian life. There are dazzling white beaches to relax at on the coral atolls of Lelevia and Caqelai to the south of Ovalau, or visit nearby Naigani Island, with its white sand beaches, coral reef, diving and surfing. Ovalau’s airstrip and ferry landing are located on the island’s western coast. Air Fiji runs daily flights between Levuka and Suva.
