Things to Do in Ovalau

Things to see and do in Ovalau, Ovalau highlights, Ovalau activities and attractions, and points of interest in Ovalau - the ALL NEW Jasons Ovalau Things to Do Guide is your complete guide to sightseeing in Ovalau.

  • Levuka
Charming Levuka is well worth a visit. Aside from its laidback pace, many of its quaint colonial buildings are still in tact, including Fiji’s oldest hotel (The Royal), Fiji’s first private club, (Ovalau Club), Fiji’s original Morris Hedstrom trading store, dating back to 1868, and the old Sacred Heart Church, dating back to 1858.
  • Historic Town Tour
Meet with local residents and hear about Levuka’s colourful past as you view the town’s historic sites.
  • Fiji Museum
Located in the old Morris Hestrom store, this branch of the Fiji Museum has a variety of artefacts and old photos of the town, along with a large shell collection.
  • Cycling
Cycling is the ideal way to explore around Levuka. The road south is pretty flat – you can hire mountainbikes in town at Ovalau Watersports.
  • Snorkelling & Diving
The largely undiscovered reefs around Ovalau offer wonderful dive spots where you can get up close to manta rays, sharks, lion fish and turtles, and there are more than 50 uncharted wrecks. Tiny Caqelai atoll is a great spot for snorkelling with bright coral gardens and tropical fishlife. Ovalau Watersports offers dive trips and reef snorkelling excursions.
  • Lovoni Village
The walk to Lovoni village, deep within Ovalau’s lush volcanic crater, makes an interesting excursion. Take the gravel road that follows the Bureta River inland.
  • Guided Village Visits
Guided tours trek inland through the rainforest to Lovoni Village, teaching you about Ovalau’s history and herbal remedies along the way. There are also village visits to Silana with a lovo lunch (traditional feast) and meke (dance performance), and to Natokalu Village, just south of Levuka, where you can take a bilibili (raft) ride.
  • Naigani Island
Located 10km from Ovalau, Naigani offers white sand beaches, clear lagoons, a coral reef and caves. There is excellent snorkelling and diving, as well as windsurfing, fishing, bushwalks and kayaking. There are many local reef breaks and the island has a surf resort, although surfing is for advanced surfers only. You can travel to the island by launch from Taviya village on Ovalau.
