Surfing in Fiji
There are some great surfing spots in Fiji just waiting to be tackled. Fiji's surfing hot spot is Nagigia Island, located at the southern end of
Kadavu (a 45 minute flight south of
Nadi or
Suva). The reef curves 270ยบ, picking up wind and swell from many different directions. There are five breaks with one to suit every surfers level. Intermediate surfers will find the 40m King Kong Left break both reliable and challenging. The average size of the waves is 1.2m to 2.4m (4ft to 8ft) and the deepwater take-off reduces the risks of coral scratches. Offshore trade winds guarantee consistent surf, although conditions are best at high tide when the water is not so shallow. More advanced surfers will enjoy the fast-tube King Kong Right break, while those just learning to surf can tackle the Beginner Daku break, best surfed a couple of hours either side of high tide.
Some of the best surf breaks are found off Tavarua in Fiji's
Mamanuca group, with prime conditions from April to December. Namotu Left and Cloudbreak are internationally recognised as the most challenging breaks in the South Pacific, although they are unsuitable for beginners.
Waidroka Bay, on
Viti Levu, offers a range of opportunities and, best of all, it's not crowded. The Frigates break offers big barrels and long rides, and is world famous for its power and consistency, while Resorts Left break is ideal for beginner surfers.
