Things to Do in Northern Province

• Horse Riding
  You can go exploring on a full-day safari at Koné on the west coast of the Northern Province. The stables are located 2km north of town.
• Church of St Jeanne d’Arc
  At the town of Koumac on the west coast, this unusual church was built out of a recycled aircraft hangar in 1950. Inside are beautiful stained glass windows and woodcarvings inspired by traditional Kanak art.
• Ba Falls
  These mighty falls on the north-east coast can be reached on foot. There is a pool for swimming at the base, and fine views over the area from the top of the falls.
• Touhu Mission
  Established in 1853, this mission on the north-east coast is surrounded by orchards, tall pines and a coffee plantation. Touhu’s main beach is also popular for swimming.
• Lindéralique Cliffs
  These jagged black limestone cliffs start 9km south of Hienghène village. Reaching 60m high, they are topped by razor-sharp edges. You can explore the area’s many hidden coves and caves, which have swallows and flying foxes.
• Lindéralique Cave
  South of Hienghène, this vast cave has some interesting rock formations inside. The turn-off is 2.5km south of town.
• Point de Vue
  This lookout point is the place to stop for breathtaking views of the Lindéralique rock formations, including Le Poulet (the chicken) and Le Sphinx. It’s located 1.5km south of the cultural centre.
• Cultural Centre
  Just before Hienghène, the cultural centre has a museum with Pacific artefacts including spears, pottery and weapons, a Pacific library and a theatre. The centre opens 8am to noon, and 1-4pm weekdays, plus Saturday mornings.
• Ouaième Bac
  Take a scenic ride on New Caledonia's last bac, or river ferry, which carries vehicles across the Ouaième River north-west of Hienghène.
• Tao Falls
  Tumbling down from the Masif du Panié range, these impressive falls can be reached by a path that begins 7km north of the Ouaième River ferry. There is an entry fee.
• Climbing Mont Panié
  New Caledonia’s highest peak takes most of the day to climb, and has a hut for hikers to stay overnight. On a clear day, the summit offers fantastic views over the reef and hinterland.
