The southernmost atoll of the
Loyalty Islands, Maré is the most rugged of the group, and is known for its wild beauty. There are eight main districts on Maré - Laroche, Penelo, Eni, Guahma, Tadine, Medu, Tawainedre and Wabao. The Maré Islanders are proud of their Kanak culture and traditions, which still play an important part in daily life.
Maré is known for its dramatic scenery, with rugged cliffs, dense tropical rainforest and sandy white coves lining its lagoon. The island's central plain is pierced with natural caves and waterholes (trou), where visitors can see fish and turtles.
