Listing Details

Since its foundation, in 1956, and in spite of its small size and great distance from Europe, the Noumea Aquarium has benefited from an international reputation. This is certainly the result of several special features that make it a very unique aquarium. It uses running sea water and natural sunlight, which allows the marine organisms to be kept in conditions that mimic their natural habitat. Therefore the tanks exhibit not only beautiful fish but also the numerous invertebrates that form a living community background. In 1957, the founders of the Aquarium discovered that some corals have natural fluorescence and added these to the display. In 1958, they were the first to exhibit a living nautilus. Although on the outside not as spectacular as more modern aquaria, the exhibits themselves are often spectacular, and the intimate and natural surroundings make it an interesting and unforgettable experience for visitors. Opening hours 10am to 4.30pm, Tuesday to Sunday - open on Friday until 9pm
