Located at the southern end of Ninety Mile Beach, just 14km west of
Kaitaia, Ahipara is a holiday haven and offers fishing, surfing, horse riding and golf on a scenic oceanside course.
One of the best known features of Ahipara is the massive sand dunes at the town's southern end. The dunes were once lucrative gumfields and were worked by gumdiggers from about 1880 until the second world war - at the peak of this time Ahipara had a population of 2000 people. Visitors can still search for gum and may even find a piece - the stream running into Shipwreck Bay is a good spot to look. The bay was named after the ship 'Favourite', which was wrecked here in 1870.
