The dunes were once lucrative gumfields and were worked by gumdiggers from about 1880 until the second world war - at the peak of this time Ahipara had a population of 2000 people. Visitors can still search for gum and may even find a piece - the stream running into Shipwreck Bay is a good spot to look. The bay was named after the ship 'Favourite', which was wrecked here in 1870.
