Things to Do in Athenree

• Hot Pools
  The Athenree hot pools are free and natural. Soaking for a few hours in a hot pool is a great way to relax and unwind.
• The Beach
  There are several beautiful beaches close by that are great for swimming, surfing, fishing, kayaking and boating.
• Walks
  Taking a walk is a great way to explore the local area, and there are no shortage of walks around Athenree. The harbourside walk is 30 minutes return and gives you good views of Bowentown harbour and the beautiful pohutukawa trees. There are bushwalks around Katikati that can take anywhere between one and five hours to complete.
• Golf
  There is an 18-hole golf course at Waihi.
• Waihi Beach
  Waihi Beach is an 8km stretch of ocean beach popular with holidaymakers and surfers. At the north end of the beach a track traverses the headland to Orakawa Bay, a scenic spot fringed by pohutukawa trees.
• Tauranga
  Situated at the southern end of Tauranga Harbour, Tauranga is the Bay of Plenty's main centre. The beautiful harbour offers a multitude of water-based activities including swimming, surfing, diving, waterskiing, kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, parasailing and swimming with dolphins. The city is also renowned as a base for big game fishing.
• Matakana Island
  A wildlife refuge on the seaward side of Tauranga Harbour, with an impressive 24km white sand beach. There is good surfing, windsurfing, kayaking and fishing. Day trips depart from Omokoroa, situated midway between Katikati and Tauranga.
• Katikati
  Katikati is scenically located on the Uretara River. Buildings on the main street are decorated with striking murals earning the town its reputation as New Zealand's 'outdoor art gallery'. Other attractions include the relaxing thermal pools at Sapphire Springs, the Katikati Bird Gardens and winetasting.
