Business Overview Auckland has emerged since the 1980s to claim a position as New Zealand's commercial capital. The city has a diversified economy built on manufacturing, import/export (through the nation's largest port), banking, finance and education. The Ports of Auckland handle some 60 percent of the country's general cargo, with about 6.5 million tonnes passing across its wharves. Auckland has three full universities, plus a number of polytechnics and specialist training schools.
