  North of Auckland near the village of Leigh, New Zealand's oldest marine park is known for its diving, snorkelling and glass-bottomed boat tours.
• Waitakere Ranges
  The award-winning Arataki Environment & Heritage Centre offers information on some 200km of walking and hiking tracks, and on the flora and fauna within the Waitakere Ranges.
• Hunua Ranges
  These rugged ranges south of Auckland offer excellent walking trails, picnic spots, abseiling and fine views across to Coromandel Peninsula.
• Beaches
  West of the city, the magnificent black sand beaches of Piha, Karekare and Bethell's Beach are popular with surfers and hikers, while Muriwai is home to a thriving gannet colony.
• Wineries
  Auckland has been one of New Zealand's key wine-growing areas since the early 20th century, when Croatian, English and Lebanese winemakers planted their first vines.  Today, the region's many vineyards offer everything from cellar door sales and tastings to vineyard restaurants and cafes.  West Auckland is the city's largest wine region, extending to the boutiqe winemakers around the country towns of Kumeu and Huapai.  Further north, there are a clutch of vineyards at Matakana, while south Auckland is home to the internationally renowned Villa Maria.  A number of boutique wineries have also sprung up on Waiheke Island.
• Rainbow's End Theme Park
  New Zealand's largest amusement theme park, with rides ranging from the traditional log flume and corkscrew rollercoaster to the new Power Surge and Fearfall rides.
• Auckland Botanic Gardens
  A 64ha garden located south of the city at Manurewa, with ornamental plants, native and exotic species and guided rambles on the first Sunday of the month.
• Howick Historical Village
  East of Auckland, this restored village settlement showcases settler life from the mid-to-late 1800s; the restored buildings include settler cottages that were home to Auckland's early fencibles (soldiers/settlers).  Live theme days occur on the third Sunday of each month.
• Glenbrook Vintage Railway & Farm Park
  Located off Waiuku Road south of Auckland, the park features steam train rides and a children's animal park.
• Waiwera Thermal Resort
  Some 30km north of Auckland, Waiwera's hot thermal pools and adventure slides are a popular leisure attraction.
