Things to Do in Bluff

Things to see and do in Bluff, Bluff highlights, Bluff activities and attractions, and points of interest in Bluff - the ALL NEW Jasons Bluff Things to Do Guide is your complete guide to sightseeing in Bluff.

  • The Oysters
Bluff is the birthing place of a world class delicacy - some people believe that the Bluff oyster is the best you can find. They are grown in the cold clean water of Foveaux Straight. Commercial oystering began in Stewart Auckland in te 1860s.
  • Bluff Oyster & Food Festival
An annual event featuring an array of Southland seafood, fine wine and entertainment, inlcluding locally grown and produced products and fresh, and succulent seafood.
  • Stirling Point
The Stirling Point signpost marks the start of State Highway 1 - the highway that runs right up to the tip of Northland. Stand here and figure out how far you are from home - the signpost gives distances to some of the world's main cities.
  • Walks
From the Point, you can set out on two beautiful walks to check out some more of the city. The Foveaux Walk is a two hour trek along the coastline and the Glory Track is a shorter 20-30 minute walk. The Greenpoint Walkway is off State Highway 1 on your way to Bluff. This is not a difficult walk and you'll have some stunning views across Bluff Harbour. From the viewing platform you'll see a ship graveyard and a sign points out some of Bluff's historic landmarks.
  • Bluff Hill
Trek (or drive) the 3km to the summit of Bluff Hill, 250m above sea level. From up here you'll have amazing views of Foveaux Straight, Stewart Island and Invercargill.
  • Maritime Museum
The museum will give you an insight into the history of Bluff and Southland itself. Find out about the history of oystering, whaling and the development of the harbour. Monica II is on display - an oyster boat that you can explore and find out how one of these things works.
  • Dining
As can be expected from a fishing town, there are some great seafood restaurants around.
  • Paua House
Wallpaper isn't needed around here. The walls of Fred and Myrtles Paua House are totally covered in the shining silver of paua. When the light comes in the window, the colour of the shells change between different shades of purple, green and yellow. The garden is also decorated with these unique shells.
  • Cemetary
A trip to the cemetary isn't always top on one's "things to do" list, but Sir Joseph Ward, ex-Prime Minister of New Zealand, is buried in the old Bluff cemetary.
