Maungatautari – a living treasure
Imagine a New Zealand forest completely free of introduced mammalian pests, where native wildlife abounds and the air is filled with birdsong.
That is the goal for Maungatautari, a 3400ha extinct volcano covered in regenerating native forest. It is the largest restoration project in New Zealand involving the total eradication of pests. A 47km pest proof fence skirts the mountain’s boundary, protecting the forest.
Takahe, kiwi, kaka, and kokopu have already been introduced to two pest free enclosures and join a host of native birds which are increasing in numbers.
Approximately 5km of wide metalled walking tracks, a 16 metre tall viewing tower and an aviary greet visitors to the southern enclosure. For the more energetic, the walk over the mountain is very popular.
If you are visiting at night you may like to book a guided night walk – a preset two course dinner followed by a visit to the southern enclosure to see the forest’s nightlife come alive!
