Skiing in Canterbury

Skiing is a big drawcard for winter visitors to Canterbury.  There are a good number of fields within the region, that offer a wide range of facilities and experiences.

  • Mt Hutt - the nearest commercial skifield to Christchurch, Mt Hutt offers terrain and facilities for all levels of skiers.
  • Porter Heights - located within the Craigieburn Range, this complex offers skiing for all levels
  • Hanmer Springs (Mount St Patrick) - a smallish field with three basins offering a variety of terrain
  • Temple Basin - high on the main Divide on the Southern Alps - about 2 hours drive from Christchurch.
  • Roundhill - in the heart of the Mackenzie country - about 30 minutes from Lake Tekapo.  Ideal learner and intermediate terrain
  • Mt Lyford - 26 kilometres from Waiau and 60 kilometres from Hanmer
  • Broken River - the middle of the Craigieburn Range providing mid-day sun over three large open basins
  • Mt Cheeseman - the second closest ski area to Christchurch (after Porter's Pass)
  • Mt Olympus - known as the Southern Alps' best kept powder secret
  • Craigieburn - featuring the infamous 600m vertical descent of Middle Basin
  • Fox Peak - with terrain ranging from big wide-open faces to the adventurous South Basin and North Basin Ridge.
  • Mount Dobson - offers the complete skiing and boarding experience with rolling natural terrain.
  • Ohau - enjoys reliable snowfall and fine weather, and is serviced by the longest T-Bar in New Zealand.
