  • Ninety Mile Beach
Popular with locals and tourists alike is Ninety Mile Beach. This vast stretch of wild coastline isn't actually 90 miles long (rather, it is about 100km or 64 miles long), but it's still an incredible sight. Coaches regularly drive on to the beach, but remember your hire vehicles are not insured here.
  • Opononi
During the 1950s, thousands descended on the then isolated community of Opononi on the Hokianga Harbour to see Opo the dolphin. This wild dolphin was a firm fixture in the harbour and developed a strong relationship with the local townspeople.
  • Waipoua Forest
Heading down the west coast is the impenetrable bush of the Waipoua Forest, whose towering ancient kauri trees make an incredible sight. You can also visit the Matakohe Kauri Museum, where you'll see the diameter of the largest standing kauri, Tane Mahuta, is 4m slimmer than the largest known kauri to have existed.
