Visiting the revamped Paua Shell Factory and Shop is the nearest thing to being underwater without getting wet. The shop showroom has been enlarged to twice its size and decorated to be a cave complete with the treasures displayed around it. Made from paua, the world's most colourful shell, the shop gleams with beauty. Through into the cafeteria you will find an underwater land with a saltwater aquarium containing live paua, seahorses and other rock pool species. The walls, ceiling and floor are painted with a mural of an underwater Wairarapa coastal scene. There you are welcome to enjoy a complimentary tea or coffee while you watch a fascinating five minute video on the life of paua, and the techniques used in the carving of the shell.
