  • Nugget Point
This windswept peninsula with its historic lighthouse (dating back to 1870) is home to southern fur seals, native sealions and occasionally elephant seals. There are also numerous seabirds including gannets and shags, shearwaters, blue penguins and native yellow-eyed penguins.
  • Purakaunui Falls
These dramatic tiered falls are among New Zealand's most photographed. A short bushwalk leads to the falls, and there is a viewing platform at the base.
  • Catlins Forest Park
This beautiful podocarp forest contains native trees such as miro, rimu, totara and kahikatea, as well as rich native birdlife including bellbirds, fantails, tuis and kakariki.
  • Curio Bay
The fossilised forest at Curio Bay is 160 million years old and one of the most extensive in the world. It can be viewed at low tide.
  • Porpoise Bay
Dolphin Magic runs dolphin watching trips and cruises to the fur seal and sea lion colonies at the Brothers.
  • Cathedral Caves
Located near Wapiti Beach, these deep chambers with their high 'ceilings' were carved out of the cliffs by the sea. It is a 15 minute walk to the beach, and a further 25 minutes to the caves. The caves rise up to 30 metres and can only be entered at low tide.
  • Maclean Falls
A turn-off just before the Cathedral Cave car park leads to a 30 minute bushwalk which ends at these scenic falls.
  • Walks
Walks in the region include the Top Track at Papatowai, a two day, 26km walk over beaches and private forest; the River Walk at Catlins Forest Park and the Pounawea Nature Walk on the northern side of the Catlins River. The visitor centre has details.
  • Slope Point
The most southern point of the South Island, noted for its windswept beauty.
  • Waipapa Point
A lighthouse and the scene of New Zealand's worst shipping disaster - the wreck of the Tararua in 1881.
