Golden Bay
A stretch of golden coast between Kahurangi and Abel Tasman National Park, adjoining Farewell Spit.
Farewell Spit
This 24km long sandspit, with its landmark century old lighthouse, is the South Island's most northerly point and a wildlife refuge for the godwits which nest here between September and March. Visitors can also see oystercatchers, turnstones, Caspian terns, gannets and black shags. The spit has caused many shipwrecks and some are still visible, including that of the
Messenger
, which went down on 19 September 1879.
Kahurangi National Park
Covering 400,000ha of wilderness, Kahurangi is an ecological treasure with more than 100 bird species, 50% of all New Zealand's plant species and 80% of the country's alpine plants. Guided walks available in Kahurangi National Park include the Heaphy Track, Chaffey Cottage, Aorere Goldfields and Cobb Valley.
Walks
Located 13km southwest of Collingwood, the Aorere Goldfields Walk takes in the old diggings, shafts and tunnels of New Zealand's first major goldfield. Care must be taking when exploring. West of Collingwood is the popular Kaituna Track. A return walk (2-3hrs) leads through old goldmining sites, while a longer track (12km) winds up at Whanganui Inlet. The Heaphy Track (4-6days) is one of New Zealand's most popular, offering panoramic views from the top of Mt Perry.
Rockville
Natural rock formations 8km southwest of the town, with a small private museum displaying local minerals, shells, birds and Maori artefacts.
Devil's Boots
Located just beyond Rockville, this natural rock formation has the appearance of upturned boots.
Te Anaroa Caves
A series of extensive limestone caves with stalactite and stalagmite formations located near Rockville. The caves are 9km southwest of Collingwood.
Collingwood Museum
A tiny museum with artefacts from the town’s pioneering history.
Wharariki Beach
A rugged West Coast beach with dunes, rock islets and a seal colony, located 29km north of Collingwood.
