Dannevirke is the largest community in the
Tararua district. Situated near the foothills of the Ruahine Ranges, Dannevirke was settled by Scandinavian immigrants who came to a settlement located in the midst of a giant totara forest known as Seventy Mile Bush. The name Dannevirke means 'Danes' work'.
A huge fire in 1917 saw much of Dannevirke’s shopping area destroyed, but the town was quickly rebuilt. Dannevirke has excellent recreational facilities and excels in sports.
