Famous for its abundant native wildlife and dramatic coastline, the Dunedin Area stretches from
Mosgiel in the south, through
Dunedin City, and up the coast to
Karitane and
Waikouaiti. One of New Zealand’s most historic cities, Dunedin enjoys a beautiful location at the head of the Otago Harbour, and boasts 24 heritage Victorian and Edwardian buildings. Tour the stately Ovelston Manor, or head down to the elegant Railway Station and take a ride on the
Taieri Gorge Railway. One of the country's most delightful train trips, it provides plenty of photo opportunities as it winds its way through this historic goldmining region.
Beyond the city environs lie the natural wonders of the Otago Peninsula, where you’ll see gannets, albatross, sea lions and yellow-eyed penguins in their natural habitat. South of Dunedin, Mosgiel sits at the head of the scenic Taieri River valley, and there is jetboating for the thrill seekers. To the north are the small fishing village of Karitane and historic Waikouaiti, with their beautiful bays. Head to the Karitane Lookout for stunning coastal views, or learn about the region’s settler history at Waikouaiti museum.
