Hulmes Court and Hulmes Too are two beautiful homes situated right in the heart of Dunedin - only a few minutes walk from the visitor centre, restaurants, shops and theatres. However, Tennyson Street is a quiet side street and the property has gardens, trees, decks and sitting areas.
Norman, who started the B&B and is your host, is a born and bred New Zealander (a true Kiwi) from a family of pioneers who arrived in the 1800s. Although he is young (43), he owns a number of businesses including a plastics factory and an advertising company. He is interested in history, philosophy and geography, stood for Parliament twice, and is well travelled. His staff, who he has trained to be great co-hosts, are generally New Zealanders too, most studying at the local university. So the atmosphere of Hulmes Court is relaxed, quirky, youthful, intelligent, educated and very friendly. We have a cool black cat called Solstice, and a new addition to the family called Jimmy. Norman has journeyed widely and knows what travellers need: a homely atmosphere, peace, relaxation, comfortable beds, warmth, continental breakfast, friendly service and good information. In addition, we provide free laundry, internet off-street parking. We enjoy children staying with us too.
The Victorian Hulmes Court is one of the oldest and most historic homes in Dunedin. It was built in the 1860s by the first provincial surgeon, Edward Hulme, who helped found the Otago Medical School. Hulmes Too is a large Edwardian home built next to Hulmes Court on the grounds of the original estate. Hulmes Court & Too have a variety of rooms which cater for all tastes, from the economical cute single Rose Room at $70 per night, our standard ensuite rooms at $135 per night to our large and grand ensuite rooms in Hulmes Too at $165 per night.
