An area rich in Maori and European heritage, beautiful Eastland starts the moment you drive onto Highway 35 at
Opotiki and continues down to the relaxed coastal city of
Gisborne, known as New Zealand's Chardonnay Capital. Exploring Eastland is a real delight, and a great way to discover some of the tiny communities that offer a genuine experience of Aotearoa New Zealand. The road hugs the sea on one side, and on the other are wild Raukumara Ranges stretching to the interior. As you travel, you can explore beaches strewn with driftwood and fish from rocky bays fringed with pohutukawa. When you've met the locals in Eastland, you will begin to understand how linked land and people can be.
Eastland is one of the North Island's premier winemaking and grape-growing areas. This fertile farming and horticultural area also offers a host of outdoor activities that includes horse trekking, hunting, surfing, golf and whitewater rafting. Located on the sweeping coast of Poverty Bay, Gisborne is the region's key centre and famous as the first city in the world to see the sunrise. It's also the country's Chardonnay Capital, and an ideal base from which to visit the region's renowned wineries. Eastland district is a gateway to Urewera National Park and the popular Lake Waikaremoana circuit, one of New Zealand's Ten Great Walks.
Mahia Peninsula and
Wairoa offer plenty of choices for outdoor action including hiking, hunting, fishing and horse trekking.
