Lying 42km north of
Masterton, Eketahuna occupies a pleseant area on the banks of the Makakahi River. This is an attractive town nestled below the beautiful Tararua Ranges and is a great place to come and relax.

Mt Bruce Wildlife Centre lies just to the south. Eketahuna has a strong Maori and Scandinavian history. The early settlers - the Swedes, English, Norwegian and some Germans - named the town 'Mellemskov', which means 'Heart of the Forest'. It was later named Eketahuna by the Maori. Nowadays, Eketahuna services a large rural area and has a strong dairy farming industry.
