Fell Locomotive Museum
Featuring the world’s only remaining Fell locomotive and a Fell brake van, the museum is open daily.
Cross Creek Miniature Fell Society
This miniature replica of the Fell Engine at Clifford Square is ideal for children.
Featherston Heritage Complex
The museum features displays from the early 1850s, when the town was settled, through to memorabilia from its use as a military camp in World War I, and as a Japanese Prisoner of War camp in World War II.
Featherston Art Gallery
Located in the old ANZ Bank building, the gallery houses historic and contemporary works of art and sculpture.
Tauherenikau Racecourse
Just 5km north of Featherston, this historic country racecourse draws the crowds during race days, and has some lovely picnic areas and native bush to explore.
Lake Wairarapa
South of town, the internationally renowned wetlands at Lake Wairarapa are home to some 80 species of birds, as well as flounder and brown trout. The lake also offers fishing, walking, picnicking and camping.
Kahutara Canoes & Taxidermy Museum
Just out of town, this taxidermist museum has a unique collection of mounted animals and birds. There are also canoeing tours down the Ruamahunga River.
Cape Palliser
An hour’s drive from the town, the Cape is known for its spectacular scenery, and popular for surfcasting, diving and surfing. The historic lighthouse, built in 1897, has breathtaking views down the coast from the top of its 252 stairs.
Putangirua Pinnacles
En route to the cape, these dramatic rock formations were used in scenes from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The reserve is 13km along Cape Palliser Road after the Lake Ferry turn-off.
Walks
Popular walks include the Western Palliser Bay Coastal Walk, which takes in the seal colony at the Cape, and the Rimutaka Incline – once the route of New Zealand’s steepest railway line.
