    En route to the cape, these dramatic rock formations were used in scenes from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The reserve is 13km along Cape Palliser Road after the Lake Ferry turn-off.

    Popular walks include the Western Palliser Bay Coastal Walk, which takes in the seal colony at the Cape, and the Rimutaka Incline – once the route of New Zealand’s steepest railway line.
