On the west bank of the Oroua River, Feilding was founded in 1874 when settlers arrived to carve farmland from the dense bush. The layout of the town is based on the city of Manchester. Marked by its distinctive clock tower, Feilding has been voted NZ's 'Most Beautiful Town' twelve times. The town's Edwardian shops have been carefully restored, and there are many lovely heritage homes to explore in the surrounding area. A busy rural servicing town, Feilding is home to the largest saleyards in New Zealand, and to the annual North Island Shearing Champs. Feilding is also known for its beautiful gardens, thriving arts and crafts, and the Manfeild Racetrack, one of New Zealand's top motor racing circuits.
The surrounding bush, parks and native reserves, including the rugged Ruahine Ranges, are ideal places to experience the great outdoors. Bushwalks and hikes range from short walks to five-day hikes, and there are plenty of picnic, swimming and fishing spots. Horse trekking, jetboat tours, 4WD, kayaking and motor racing are just a few of the adventure activities available in the region.
