Fox Glacier Travel Guide

Fox Glacier accommodation, Fox Glacier activities and attractions, Fox Glacier maps, transportation to and around Fox Glacier - the ALL NEW Jasons Fox Glacier Destination Travel Guide is your complete visitor guide for Fox Glacier.

Fox Glacier, along with its twin of Franz Josef, is undeniably one of the biggest attractions on the West Coast, and a must-see for visitors to the rugged Glacier Country. Named after former New Zealand Prime Minister, Sir William Fox, this spectacular frozen river snakes down from the mountains for a distance of 13.5km. Join a guided tour and you can even walk on this mighty river of ice, or take to the skies for a magnificent bird's-eye view of the Fox Glacier area.

The pristine native rainforest surrounding Fox Glacier adds to its scenic splendor, providing a host of scenic trails and bushwalks to enjoy. Try the walk up Mount Fox for a stunning vista of the mountains, or take the hour-long walk around Lake Matheson, famous for the beautiful mountain reflections of its still waters. Nature lovers can visit Gillespies Beach, a wild stretch of coastline which leads out to a seal colony at Gillespies Point. The Department of Conservation information centre at Franz Josef (25km to the north) has information on the glaciers and their geology.
