Things to Do in Fox Glacier

Things to see and do in Fox Glacier, Fox Glacier highlights, Fox Glacier activities and attractions, and points of interest in Fox Glacier - the ALL NEW Jasons Fox Glacier Things to Do Guide is your complete guide to sightseeing in Fox Glacier.

  • Fox Glacier
Named after former NZ Prime Minister Sir William Fox, this glacier (along with the Franz Josef) is the most low-lying in the world. It's been moving forward since 1985, and has advanced almost a kilometre since then. Visitors are able to walk on the ice if accompanied by a guide.
  • Walks
There are some scenic bushwalks in the area, the most popular being the Glowworm Dell (best walked at night). Other walks around the glacier include Minnehaha Walk, the River Walk and the Moraine Walk. The visitor centre has leaflets detailing walks.
  • Flightseeing
Aerial flights provide superb views of the glaciers and the Southern Alps. There are numerous operators including Glacier Southern Lakes Helicopters on the Main Road.
  • Lake Matheson
One of New Zealand's most famous vistas offers picture perfect views of the mountains reflected in the placid waters of the lake (best seen early morning). An hour-long walk leads around the lake.
  • Mount Fox
En route to Haast, on SH6, a 4hr walk (one way) leads to a lookout with a stunning vista of the mountains.
  • Gillespies Beach
A wild stretch of coastline with a seal colony at Gillespies Point.
