Things to Do in Glenorchy

Things to see and do in Glenorchy, Glenorchy highlights, Glenorchy activities and attractions, and points of interest in Glenorchy - the ALL NEW Jasons Glenorchy Things to Do Guide is your complete guide to sightseeing in Glenorchy.

  • Horse riding
Make the effort to get up first thing in the morning - the sun will still be rising slowly, the mist may not have yet lifted and as you walk your horse along the shores of the lake you will hear the sweet morning sounds of the area coming to life. Horse riding will give you a glimpse into a part of the area that you will never see from the road, and if you have some experience, the horses love to go for a run along the lake bed and through the icy water.
  • Jetboating
Take a spin up the Dart River to see the isolated splendour of the area. Make sure you wrap up warm becuase the wind will whip around you but you will be rewarded with the beauty of the jagged cliff faces falling into the crystal clear water. You'll even get a much needed "soup and coffee stop" when you'll have the chance to go for a short bushwalk alongside an impossibly clear, bright-blue stream.
  • Bike riding
Grab a bike from the hotel and go for a quiet ride through the town or along the main road.
  • Paradise
This is Lord of the Rings country! Head away from Queenstown for another 20 minutes or so, and you'll hit Paradise - where part of this fantastic movie was filmed.
  • Hiking
Glenorchy is close to the start of some of the best tracks in the country including the Routeburn track, Caples and Greenstone. These walks are beautiful, and if you don't have the time (or energy) to do the whole thing, at least give the start a go. The bush is beautiful, the tracks are well defined, the rivers rushing through are stunning and there is birdlife all around.
  • Fun on the lake
Kayaking can be one of the best ways to explore the fringe of Lake Wakatipu and the Dart River. There are also boat charters that can take you for a spin.
  • Four-wheel drives
Head up the hills for a fun time and fantastic views in a four-wheel drive.
