The old coalmining town of Glentunnel sits nestled in the
Canterbury foothills, close to six different skifields - the town is just 40 minutes from
Mt Hutt and 30km from
Methven. Glentunnel's pottery and brickworks were important industries until the late 1980s and many of Glentunnel's old buildings are created with the local brick. Glentunnel's 18-hole golf course is set across the terraces of the Selwyn River and makes a picturesque spot for a game of golf.
There are several good walks to enjoy in the area. The Millennium Walkway follows the railbed of an abandoned tramway, passing several points of historical interest before finishing at the entrance of the old Glentunnel mine. The Malvern hills also offer stunning views over the Canterbury Plains and across to the Southern Alps. Head to nearby
Darfield for a hot-air balloon ride and more beautiful views over the towering mountains. The Rakaia River is close by with good trout and salmon fishing. In fact, this river has the largest runs of King Salmon in New Zealand. If you're up for something a bit more adventurous, take a head-spinning jetboat ride down the river.
