Gore Travel Guide

Gore accommodation, Gore activities and attractions, Gore maps, transportation to and around Gore - the ALL NEW Jasons Gore Destination Travel Guide is your complete visitor guide for Gore.

Gore, the second-largest town in Southland, is famous as the brown trout capital of the world and as New Zealand's heart of country music. The town sits alongside the Mataura River, which lures anglers from throughout the world to test their skills against the brown trout found in the river and its tributaries. In June Gore hosts the New Zealand Gold Guitar Awards, New Zealand's premier country music festival, and in February the Hokonui Outdoor Country Music Festival features local, national and international entertainers. Gore's heritage has some interesting tales to tell - visit the Hokonui Moonshine Museum to learn about the area's illicit whisky distilling, or follow the Gore Heritage Trail walking tour of historic sites in the town.

Also of interest is the Croydon Aircraft Company with its restored de Havilland planes. The new Gore Multisport Complex is adding a major recreational facility to the town with an ice arena, aquatic centre and indoor stadium. Gore is conveniently situated for exploring some of the South Island's finest scenic attractions, including fabulous Fiordland and the Southern Lakes, the rugged country of Central Otago, the undulating Southland Plains, the south-east coast and the area's many good fishing rivers.
