The seaside hamlet of Te Awanga is home to Clearview Estate, one of the country’s first vineyard winery restaurants, and still among the best. Clearview’s first release in 1989 revealed the wine-producing potential of Hawke’s Bay’s coastal stony plains and the wines have been winning accolades ever since. Small volumes of hand-made fruit-driven wines are Clearview’s hallmark, celebrated wines include Reserve Chardonnay, Bordeaux-style reds, barrel fermented Sauvignon Blanc and dessert wines. The results of hosts, Tim and Helma speak for themselves. No grand architectural edifices, just purpose-built facilities that exude warmth and vitality. One glance at their lunch platter menu and you’re hooked. Taste a selection of Tim’s range of Bordeaux-style wines and you will need some serious space in your car and cellar. You can also spend a few nights in the Winemaker’s Cottage nestled in the vineyard, just a short stroll from the winery.
