Cape Kidnappers

Cape Kidnappers is one of the largest and most accessible of mainland gannet colonies. The Australasian gannet has a wing span of up to 2 metres and weighs in at an average of 2kg. Aerial antics and dramatic dives into the sea to catch fish are all part of the display. The best time to visit is between November and late February. Chicks hatch early November and by May they are ready to migrate to Australia.

Operators offer a range of tours, from guided walks through to 4WD safaris.
  • Gannet Safaris
The 3 hour trip includes a commentary by the tour guide on the farming operation on Cape Kidnappers and an introduction to the gannets.   Travel along the fascinating coastline behind a vintage tractor towing a purpose-built passenger trailer. Learn about geology, earthquake fault lines, Maori history and birdlife including a stop at the Black Reef gannet colony.
  • Cape Kidnappers Golf Course
Built on a ridge-and-valley landscape with spectacular sea views. Keep an eye out for the gannets as you play golf.
  • Hawke's Bay Tourism
