Horowhenua stretches north from
Otaki, through the towns of
Levin,
Waitarere Beach,
Shannon,
Foxton and
Foxton Beach. Just an hour’s drive north of
Wellington, you’ll discover traditional rural landscapes as you drive along the coastal road past cafés, wineries, beaches and museums. Foxton and Levin are the main centres of Horowhenua. The Manawatu River runs just north of Shannon and is a good spot for trout fishing, kayaking and swimming.
Inland of Otaki, you can access the scenic walks of the Tararua Ranges, while the sands of Otaki, Waitarere and Foxton beaches offer four-wheel driving, fishing and surfing. Foxton River has cruises and there is wonderful birdwatching at Foxton estuary, or head into the Horowhenua countryside for horse racing, rugby, wineries, motor racing, watersports, cycling and hiking trails.
