Things to Do in Houhora

• Houhora Heads
  Approximately halfway between Kaitaia and Cape Reinga, in a beautiful inlet, are the Houhora Heads, with a campsite and picnic area.
• Mount Carmel
  Opposite the Houhora Heads is Mount Carmel (245m), named by Captain Cook.
• Wagener Museum and Pioneer Park
  The many displays include the world's largest collection of seashells, musical instruments, Victorian arcade games, guns, Maori artefacts, and a bullock team typical of those used to haul kauri logs from the forest. The park also houses the historic Subritzky-Wagener Homestead with its 18-hole golf course. The homestead was built by Polish pioneers using local timbers and mortar ground from sea shells.
• Pukenui
  This working fishing village offers good fishing off the wharf. The town's historic tavern features a bar that was formerly an old woolshed. It was dragged from Ninety Mile Beach to its present site in 1902 by a team of bullocks.
• Ninety Mile Beach
  This wild stretch of surf and sand is popular for fishing, and tour buses also drive passengers along the foreshore en route to Cape Reinga. The beach is actually about 100km (64 miles) long.
• Cape Reinga
  With its historic lighthouse perched high above the meeting point of the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea, the Cape offers magnificent seaviews. It is spiritually important for Maori as the departure point for spirits.
