Sitting alongside the broad Waikato River, the township of Huntly is known for its coalmining and for the Huntly Power Station, the largest in New Zeland. The town owes its existence to coal and continues to produce 10,000 tonnes per day. The coal-fired power station provides electricity to much of the area. The town's streets are lined with historic wooden cottages and there are pleasant picnic spots along the river.
Rail history is featured in the town's historic steam trains. Visitors can also enjoy a stroll around private gardens (seasonal) or a walk around scenic Lake Hakanoa.
