On the banks of the mighty Waikato, Huntly’s large coal-fired power station provides electricity to much of the area. Huntly’s streets are lined with historic wooden cottages and there are lovely picnic spots along the river. The town’s museum focuses on its coal mining industry and rich cultural history, with mining displays, a period cottage and a family history centre. Visitors can enjoy a walk around scenic Lake Hakanoa, a small lake and wildlife refuge next to Huntly Domain and, just out of town, Parnassus Farm and Garden has a cafe and a beautiful garden of trees, roses and perennials.
Huntly’s Bushway Tram Club is an international drawcard for train enthusiasts, offering steam train rides and displays on the first Sunday of the month (April to December). Walkers will enjoy the Hakarimata Walkway, of interest for its mature kauri trees, and the popular walk around the Lake Okowhao wetlands (open December to March).
