The Southland Museum and Art Gallery is sited on the southern side of Invercargill's Queens Park. An eye catching 25 metres high pyramid envelops the building which houses a series of permanent and temporary exhibition galleries, providing a glimpse of times past and present. Here sub Antarctic (Roaring 40s) natural history, Maori and Victorian themes are presented along with a series of temporary historical and contemporary art exhibitions sourced from Southland and beyond. A must to see is the tuatara colony, with its very successful breeding programme. Educational tours by arrangement. The Art Works cafe and museum shop are open during museum hours. Fri 9am-5pm. Sat–Sun 10am-5pm.
