Kaikohe's handy location makes it an excellent base from which to explore the region's attractions. On the western outskirts of town, Kaikohe Hill has a pleasant picnic area with panoramic views of the local countryside and across the Hokianga Harbour. The town's pioneer village captures its early history, and there are hotsprings nearby. 20km north of town, the native forest at Puketi and Omahuta is one of the largest continuous tracts of kauri forest in Northland, and offers fine hiking.
