Things to Do in Kaitaia

• Ninety Mile Beach
  This magnificent driveable 100km (64 mile) stretch of wild ocean beach is backed by sandy dunes and scrubland, and offers superb surfcasting. Bus tours drive along the foreshore en route to Cape Reinga.
• Cape Reinga 
  This rugged cape and its historic lighthouse enjoy dramatic seaviews over the place where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean converge. It has special spiritual significance for Maori as the departure point for spirits of the dead.
• Sullivan's Nocturnal Park
  Located at Fairburn, the park features kiwi, a glowworm cave and a stream with short-fin eels. Bushwalks and night tours are offered.
• Far North Regional Museum
  The region's museum contains a giant moa skeleton as well as photos and relics from the kauri industry and early shipwrecks.
• Wagener Park and Museum
  The many displays include the world's largest collection of seashells, musical instruments, Victorian arcade games, guns, and Maori artefacts. The park also houses the historic Subritzky-Wagener Homestead with its 18-hole golf course. The homestead was built by Polish pioneers using local timbers and mortar ground from sea shells. There is also a motor camp, café and giftstore.
• Te Wero Nui Trust
  A Maori arts and crafts outlet offering cultural activities including herbal medicines, weaving and wood and bone carving.
• Okahu Estate
  New Zealand's most northerly winery is open daily in summer, 3.5km south of Kaitaia.
• Ancient Kauri Kingdom and Café
  Visitors can tour the this factory where furniture and crafts are made from petrified kauri stumps (hauled from the swamps) up to 50,000 years old. There is a café on site.
• Ahipara
  Just 14km west of Kaitaia, Ahipara has a magnificent beach and a surfside golf course with stunning scenery.
