The little town of Kaitangata, with a population of less than 800 people, is nestled on the banks of the Clutha River, 10km south of
Balclutha.
The early settlers came to the region around Kaitangata in the 1800s to set up, and work in, coal mines. An open cast mine still exists in Kaitangata today and the coal is used throughout
Otago and
Southland. There are also various sites of mines that are no longer in use.
