Nestled at the base of Mt Taranaki, the small town of Kaponga was settled in 1882 and has a strong Swiss connection. Some of the first settlers in the Kaponga area were Swiss and in 1952 the Taranaki Swiss Club was formed.
North of Kaponga is the southern entrance to the
Egmont National Park - one of New Zealand's most accessible wilderness areas. Most people heading to Dawson Falls - a 1000-year-old lava flow located in the National Park - pass through Kaponga.
