Stretching down the west coast of
Northland is the magnificent Kauri Coast, New Zealand's largest remnant of the ancient kauri trees that once covered the land. While you’re travelling through Kauri Coast, be sure to Waipoua Forest to see Tane Mahuta, 'God of the Forest'. This majestic tree is New Zealand’s largest kauri and one of the world’s largest and most ancient trees.
The river town of
Dargaville is the Kauri Coast's main settlement and a good base to explore the region's attractions, including the beautiful Kai Iwi Lakes, the vast stretch of west coast beaches and the historic Kaipara Harbour. To the south is
Ruawai, famous as New Zealand’s Kumara Capital, or travel north of Dargaville to
Waimamaku, at the foot of the historic
Hokianga Harbour.
