  • Kemp House - Kerikeri Mission House
    Built in 1821-22, New Zealand's oldest European building was originally a mission post superintended by Rev John Butler. In 1832, it became the home of James Kemp and his family. Descendants of the Kemps retained the home until 1974, when it was gifted to the nation.
  • The Stone Store
    The Stone Store, Kerikeri, Bay of IslandsNew Zealand's oldest European stone building was built between 1832 and 1835. Part of this two-storey building once served as library for New Zealand's first Anglican bishop, George Selwyn, from 1842-1844. Later, during conflicts with Ngapuhi chief Hone Heke Pokai, it became an ammunition store. Today, it serves as a general store and the top floor contains a small museum.
  • Te Waimate Mission
    The only surviving building of three mission houses built in 1832. An archaeological walk covers what was once a thriving village, while the home is furnished with period furniture and early tools.
  • Rewa Village
    A full-scale reconstruction of a kainga (unfortified Maori village), with a kitchen, meeting house and storerooms, providing a good example of early Maori life.
  • Walks
    A short walk (10min) begins behind the Stone Store, winding up to Kororipo Pa, the fortress of famous Maori chief Hongi Hika. Nearby is the lovely St James Anglican church, built in 1878. At the reserve across the river there are several more bush tracks, including a 4km walk to the popular Rainbow Falls. Paihia Information centre has a leaflet detailing the walks.
  • Rainbow Falls
    Surrounded by thick stands of native bush, the 20km high Rainbow Falls can be reached via a walking track from Waipapa Rd (10mins). The 4km Kerikeri River track also leads to the falls via the Fairy Pools, a pleasant spot for picnics and swimming.
  • Aroha Island Ecological Centre
    A Queen Elizabeth II Trust Conservation Island offering birdlife, walks, swimming, kayaking and guided night walks to see kiwi.
  • Arts and Crafts Trail
    The trail takes in a wide range of local crafts outlets, featuring goods from handmade silks to chocolates (see feature).
  • Wharepuke Subtropical Gardens and Nursery
    A growing gallery of subtropical plants and a garden centre.
  • Puketi Kauri Forest
    Part of the 100 hectare Manginangina Scenic Reserve, it includes a wildlife refuge.
  • Edmonds Ruins
    The remains of an 1840s stone cottage, 15 minutes from Kerikeri.
