Heading north-west of Henderson is one of
Auckland's most picturesque grape-growing regions around the small rural towns of Kumeu and Huapai, and the Waimauku Valley. Winemaking began here more than 50 years ago, and took off during the 1960s.
Kumeu is set in the middle of Auckland's main orchard area, and there is plenty of opportunity to combine wine tasting with fruit picking or a summer picnic. Kumeu River Wines (48 Dysart Lane, Kumeu) and Matua Valley Wines (Waikoukou Valley Road, Waimauku) both offer tours by arrangement.
Next door to Matua, the The Hunting Lodge restaurant is set in an historic villa overlooking the vines. There is also cottage-style accommodation. Selaks Vineyard (Old North Road, Kumeu) has a lovely restaurant set in parkland and also offers tours by arrangement.
