Things to Do in Lake Tekapo

• Fishing
  The town is a centre for fly fishing over summer, and local tour operators offer tailor-made trips by 4WD or launch.
• Lake Tekapo
  Famous for its clear turquoise waters, Lake Tekapo occupies the bed of an ancient glacier. It has good trout fishing, as do its satellite lakes, Alexandrina and McGregor. Watersports include boating, kayaking and waterskiing.
• Church of the Good Shepherd
  A simple stone church on the shores of the lake, built in 1935 as a memorial to the pioneer run holders of the Mackenzie Country. The statue of a sheep dog near the church is a memorial to the working dogs which helped create the farmlands of the Mackenzie Country.
• Aoraki/Mount Cook
  New Zealand's highest peak (3754m) is known as Aoraki ('cloud piercer') by Maori. The three peaks on Cook's ridge are best seen from the upper reaches of Hooker Glacier, but ski planes also land on Tasman Glacier, allowing good views.
• Mount Cook National Park
  An alpine region of ice, snow, rock, subalpine scrub, tussock and riverbed. More than one third of the park is permanent snow and glacier ice, and the park contains 28 peaks that exceed 3000m. Skiing is available on the Ball and Tasman Glaciers.
• Walks
  Walks in the region include the popular 1hr walk up Mount St John, where there is an international observatory, a 1hr return walk to the Tekapo Lookout and a 1.5hr walk to the power station.
• Icesport Tekapo
  New Zealand’s largest purpose-built rink overlooks the lake.
• Star Gazing – Tekapo Tours
  A chance to tour the international observatory on nearby Mount St John, located at the lake's southern end. This site was chosen for its good weather and atmospheric transparency.
