The small town of Lawrence, on the
Central Otago Highway south of
Dunedin, played an important part in the gold mining of the Clutha region. Nestled in a valley beside the Tuapeka River, the historic town of Lawrence is surrounded by valleys and absolute beauty.
Lawrence has easy access to Gabriel's Gully – the first place gold was found in New Zealand in the late 1800s. This discovery resulted in a huge gold rush in the Lawrence area and various heritage buildings from this era remain. There was a large Chinese community here during the gold rush years, and evidence of their time in Lawrence can still be found. The Tuapeka Goldfields Museum will take you back in time and teach you all about the interesting history of the area.
Lawrence, with a population of only 500 people, has easy access to Dunedin where you can discover the fascinating wildlife of the area.
