Just south of
Christchurch and close to the coast, the small town of Leeston has easy access to the fun and adventure of the
Canterbury region.
Lake Ellesmore is well known for the diverse wildlife that it supports and is just a short drive away from Leeston. It can host up to 98,000 wetland birds at any one time and a large population of black swans lives here. It is also a good fishing spot, and many flounder and eels live in the choppy water. Lake Ellesmore is a shallow lake and is New Zealand's fourth largest lake and is only separated from the sea by the narrow Kaitorete Spit. This is a great spot for fun activities such as windsurfing, boating, waterskiing and jet-skiing.
Leeston is just 25 minutes south of Christchurch, so all the attractions of the city are very accessible. Head here for great shopping and dining, punting on the Avon River and all the excitement of the city. Head west of Leeston for a range of great skifields, rivers full of fish, hot-air ballooning in
Darfield and adventure activities all around.
Leeston itself services the farming areas of the Ellesmere District and has an impressive war memorial near the town's entrance. You will find that many of the town's street names are named after important battlegrounds in World War I.
