The small town of Leigh overlooks a scenic harbour dotted with fishing boats. The town is known for its popular Sawmill Café, housed in a converted sawmill, and has a reputation for its delicious fish and chips. A couple of kilometres south of Leigh, Matheson's Bay offers sheltered swimming.
North of the village is Goat Island, part of the Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve, and the tiny rural community of
Pakiri, with its stunning white sand surf beach. To the north-west is the beach community of
Mangawhai, nestled around a harbour fringed with pohutukawa trees and mangroves on one side and sand dunes on the other.
