For an escape from the city hustle, there is no better place than the small fishing village of Leigh, its picturesque harbour dotted with fishing boats. Leigh is a peaceful spot and there are lovely scenic walks and sheltered bays to explore. Leigh's popular Sawmill Café is just out of town, housed in a converted sawmill, or treat yourself to Leigh's delicious fish and chips and eat them down at the wharf. A couple of kilometres south of Leigh, tranquil Matheson's Bay is an ideal spot for a picnic, with safe swimming.
North of Leigh you can make the short drive to Goat Island, part of the Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve, where you can explore an amazing underwater world. There is snorkelling and diving or catch the glass bottom boat to view the many species of fish including moki, leatherjackets, sting ray and giant snapper.
