Things to Do in Manapouri

• Lake Manapouri
  Surrounded by mountains clad in native bush, the lake is New Zealand's second deepest, and considered to be one of its loveliest. There is good boating and fishing.
• Doubtful Sound
  This splendid wilderness area embraces dense forest, thundering waterfalls and rugged peaks. Its waters are home to bottlenose and dusky dolphins, fur seals and the rare Fiordland crested penguin. The latter nest here during October and November.
• Lake Manapouri Underground Power Station
  An engineering feat, this power station is reached by a 2km spiral tunnel hewn from solid granite. Visitors can descend through the tunnel to see how the station converts water into electricity.
• Walks
  There are several stunning walks close to the township. The top end of the Kepler Track reaches Lake Manapouri, and part of the trail can be done as a day walk (access is via a swingbridge 10km north of town). The remote 5-day Dusky Track (for experienced walkers only) leads hikers into the untouched wilderness of Dusky Sound. Shorter walks closer to town include the 3hr Circle Track, and the walk to Hope Arm.
