The Kauri Museum - Real New Zealand Heritage
Discover Real New Zealand heritage at The Kauri Museum, Matakohe in their grand NEW exhibit ‘The Otamatea Boarding House’.
Opened in August 2006 this amazing life sized, two storied replica Boarding House (circa 1910) recreates a place in time long before road or rail, when everyone came and went by boat, staying a night or two in the boarding houses of little villages that dotted the Kaipara harbour side. Each of the 10 rooms in the replica boarding house is populated with antique furniture and life like mannequins telling fascinating stories of how they came to be staying there.
So take the drive to Matakohe, only 90 minutes north of Auckland and experience the history of the mighty kauri, its gum and the pioneering past. Internationally acclaimed, with over 3000 square meters of undercover displays, it’s a great place to spend the day in any weather.
Open from 9am - 5pm everyday of the year (except Christmas Day).
