A support town for the
Mount Hutt ski area, Methven is a mecca for skiers from within New Zealand and overseas. There is plenty of après–ski excitement, with a diverse range of restaurants and bars and a nightclub.
Although it is best known as a ski resort, Methven offers a huge range of year-round outdoor activities, such as fishing, golfing, scenic flights, hunting, mountaineering, skydiving, horse-riding, 4WD safaris and
hot air ballooning, as well as whitewater rafting and jetboating at nearby Rakaia Gorge. There are also some fine walks through spectacular scenery, along which visitors can admire the native alpine flora. The town is popular during summer months as a conference centre, and throughout the year there are special events such as the Methven Summer School in January and the Methven Rodeo in October.
